AROUND THE TRAPS – NEW SOUTH WALES

Sydney Entertainment Centre

The Entertainment Centre has been rocking since the last newsletter. Tom Jones, Faye Wong, Mo Awards and Disney on Ice (21 shows), as well the last of the refurbishments to the building.

The Entertainment Centre has had over 150,000 plus patrons through its doors ensuring that the "hands on" policy starts with the Venue Manager and follows through to the casuals and all in between. So the biggest event in the world has no fear from this side of the fence line.

Sydney Superdome

The Sydney Superdome has been quiet in terms of major events, although we have been kept busy with a continual stream of functions.

The Basketball Test Event was held during the month of June. We made the most of the event as a training platform for all staff. We implemented several "games time" specific operational plans that were tested over the 7-day event. The knowledge we passed onto SOCOG from this event will no doubt place us in the best position come games time.

The Catholic Church held Confirmations 2000 at the Centre, an annual event with an attendance of 40,000 in three separate sessions throughout the day. An event like no other. There were no catering outlets opened for the duration of the event, which meant an exceptionally easy clean for our crew.

Cleanevent Team 2000 held a workshop, which saw 220 Olympic Managers congregate into the biggest Management Seminar Cleanevent has ever hosted. The week went well from the operational side of the house. Our Venue Presentation Team at the SSD were all very proud and excited to have been able to be host for so many staff who had never set foot in an Olympic Venue prior to that weekend.

We all look forward to being able to put together an exciting report for the next Teamtalk as we enter the busiest time our venue will see.

Sydney International Aquatic and Athletics Centres

The month of June was quite the opposite of the usually busy Aquatic Centre. Scope Creep has taken over and we are completing day to day cleaning and general maintenance of the building. The Olympic overlay is in full swing with a tent city forming out the back and in the normally full carpers. Dealing with 4-5 levels of customers is quite difficult at times with the left hand not sure what the right hand is up to, or whether the wallet is going to be pulled from the left pocket or the right. The number one question on everyone’s lips is…Will they be finished in time?

Activities are normal at the Athletics Centre with nothing out of the ordinary happening last month. A weekly walkthrough of the venue with Tania Newsome has been initiated to try to stop the problems that have been occurring with what she believes the scope of works to be. The month of July will be a little busier here. Within the final week they will be hosting five events in the five days before the hand over to SOCOG.
