WALK FOR THE CURE

Juvenile diabetes is one of the most common childhood diseases in Australia. It is estimated that over 100,000 children suffer from it. We don’t know what causes the disease, but the young people who suffer from it are dependent upon insulin injections everyday. These injections, sometimes up to four per day, don’t cure the disease; they treat the disease and are necessary to keep sufferers alive.

One of the major risks of juvenile diabetes is that a child will develop other health problems, which can range from blindness and nerve disease, to kidney failure.

Through funding of medical research, the Juvenile Diabetes Foundation (JDF) is dedicated to finding a cure for this disease. The major fundraising program for the foundation is "Walk For The Cure." It is a team-based walkathon held Australia wide each year.

"Walk For The Cure" was first held in 1994 in both Sydney and Melbourne, raising $550,000 for research.. This figure has continued to grow over the past six years with the 1999 figure reaching a record $1.65 million Australia wide. In 2000, the foundation hopes to increase this figure even further.

Cleanevent have been a proud State Supporting Sponsor of "Walk For The Cure" for four years and look forward to continuing to help in the task of raising funds for vital research.

This year, "Walk For The Cure" is to be held in all States on Sunday 15 October, except Queensland, which will hold the walk on Sunday 22 October.
