STATE OF THE NATION NEW SOUTH WALES
The Sydney Scene
The end of the year (financially) is upon us again. But the pressure is not going to come off. The hum of the Olympics is in the air and witnessing the growth of marquees at and around the Olympic venues is amazing.
As every day ticks by it means that we are one day closer to The Games. We can remember when the neon sign outside our office was reading 350 days to go. And by the time this article is read it will be about 40 days to go. Doesn't the future come quick?
All of the venues except Parramatta Stadium are in some form of building preparation for the Games. This has meant that we have had reduced activities in some venues and business as usual in others. The building overlay at some venues is nothing short of bewildering. We have had some windfalls by keeping close to the builders and picking up after them at the venues.
The staff that have been in the venues that have been shutting down have moved on to the other Olympic related sites as they come on line, such as the International Broadcast Centre (IBC) and the Accreditation Centre (HAAC). Everything has a name but in the form of an anagram. To name a couple more, we have SOBO and OLC.
Our staff in Sydney has also been kept busy with their Olympic workshops that have also been attended by our interstate colleagues. Flexibility will be the key word for everyone from now on and the ability to wear more than one hat will have its advantages and rewards in the weeks ahead.
