Well the Y2K bug came and went without even a hitch and
were now well into the Olympic year.
The Sydney Festival was a great outcome for us during January with three well attended
concerts in the Domain. Golf was also successful with the Australian Open and the Shark
Holden Classic.
Our first test event this year was the gymnastics at the SuperDome, then the International
Athletics meet at the Stadium (by others). Part of this event will be hosted in the Sydney
International Athletic Centre, which will be used as the warm up track. The Optus track
and field event was recently held and it was great to see Gainsford-Taylor and Shirvington
taking the double wins.
SOCOG overlay continues at the venues, the biggest being the complete build-out of the
loading dock at the Sydney Showgrounds.
We have brought two new venues on line, the NSW Tennis Centre at Homebush Bay (managed and
operated by APP) and the Dunk Gray Velodrome at Bankstown. The Velodrome in particular has
a very busy programme up until the venue rolls into Olympic mode.
The Rugby League season is upon us again with Parramatta Stadium hosting both soccer and
league up until May when the soccer eases off. No rest for our venue staff there!
The fabulous Regatta Centre at Penrith is looking like a picture postcard. The event
programme has started again with our staff receiving accolades for their efforts to date.
Temporary grandstands are already being assembled on the southern side of the venue which
will add a new dimension.
Preparation plans for the Easter Show are well in hand. We are moving into a permanent
home at the Showgrounds which will give our staff a morale boost and provide direct access
to amenities. In addition it reflects the level of activity we undertake for and on behalf
of our client. The bonus is that we get to operate within the precinct of the show which
allows us quicker and more efficient response times so our client wins, and our
clients clients, the all important customers, also win.
To complete my report, we have had several staff commended by customers for their service
delivery. It is doubly satisfying when the customer takes the time to write to convey the
information back to us. So to all our NSW staff, I personally thank you for your loyalty,
your commitment, and your team attitude.
