IT CORNER

Cleanevent has grown exponentially in the last 12-18 months, including the new challenges and growth due to the successful contract to provide cleaning and waste management to the Sydney 2000 Olympic and Paralympic Games.

A number of IT issues have been identified for attention and we are working on them progressively. These include the creation of a hardware inventory which will allow us to track our hardware and keep up to date with servicing of devices, their condition and when they may need de-commissioning; a software audit which will allow us to record all software used by Cleanevent; an overhaul of our file server and its structure and continual updating of our virus protection.

The successful introduction of our VPN (Virtual Private Network) which links the Consultancy Office at SOCOG, Rosehill and Melbourne was a major milestone for Cleanevent. The VPN allows staff to access files from any of our three office locations, send emails and browse the Internet successfully.

The Olympics & Paralympics roll ever onward and Cleanevent will be well prepared. Our headquarters at Eastern Creek will be commissioned with power, data communications and switchboard ready for us to bump in on 4 September. We will be extending our VPN to include Eastern Creek which will allow us direct access to all files in Melbourne, Sydney and SOCOG and the ability to email.

The Cleanevent Melbourne network will be ‘mirrored’ at Eastern Creek to allow us complete control of operations for the Olympic and Paralympic Games. After the Games, the new hardware used at Eastern Creek will be used to supersede hardware which is long past its ‘use by’ date in the Melbourne Office and also to satisfy hardware requirements at venues throughout Queensland, NSW and Victoria.

We’re also working on fitting out our new offices in South Melbourne. What a great opportunity to work on a ‘greenfield’ site! There is already some existing cabling in place, but this needs to be extended and upgraded. Cleanevent will be going ‘high tech’ with the implementation of video conferencing facilities and our plans for a ‘Technology Centre of Excellence’.

There are plenty of exciting things happening and lots to look forward to. Keep tuned!

Beam me up Cleanevent!
